Inaugural Zwicky Symposium

Confronting Ideas on Galactic Metamorphoses

August 31st - September 4th, 2015,  Braunwald, Switzerland

This Summer, between August 31st and September 4th, 2015, we are convening a Symposium in honor of Fritz Zwicky, the eminent Bulgaria-born Swiss astronomer (citizen of Glaurus) whose innovative ideas in the 1930's and 1940's are now seen to have laid the foundations of some of the most important areas of modern astrophysics and cosmology, including the ongoing search for the mysterious Dark Matter.

Participation in the Symposium is by invitation only.

The Symposium will take place in Braunwald, Canton Glarus, the ancestral canton of the Zwicky family, to which Fritz Zwicky returned in 1904, at the age of six, and where he lived before undertaking his studies in Mathematics and Physics at the ETH Zurich.

To pay tribute to his contributions to the study of galaxies and his interest in morphological questions, the theme of the Symposium will focus on a major open question in Galaxy Formation: what is the relation between star-formation activity, black hole growth and morphological transformation in galaxies across cosmic time. Taking inspiration from Fritz Zwicky’s enthusiasm for scientific debates, we have titled the meeting:

Confronting Ideas on Galactic Metamorphoses.

Below are the members of the Organising Committee (in alphabetical order):
